Matcha or coffee: which drink should you choose for your routine?

Maxime Besnier
Matcha ou café : quelle boisson choisir pour votre routine ?
Coffee is one of the great morning rituals. Matcha, on the other hand, has found its way into the cups of people who want to slow down a bit, vary their habits, or discover another way to start the day. So, should you choose between matcha and coffee?
The answer is simple: not necessarily. These are two very different drinks, with their own unique tastes, uses, and atmospheres. The important thing is to choose the one that suits your current mood.

Coffee and matcha: two rituals, two personalities

Coffee is often quick, direct, and familiar. We drink it before leaving, between meetings, or after a meal. Its roasted, sometimes intense, taste is unmistakable. For many, it represents an automatic, almost reassuring, gesture.
Matcha offers a calmer experience. Its preparation takes a few minutes: you sift the powder, add hot water, then whisk until a fine foam is obtained. It's not complicated, but this small gesture changes the way you start your cup.

Coffee often wakes up the day. Matcha invites you to open it with intention.
At Arigato Matcha, we like this idea of a simple ritual. Our Ceremonial Matcha comes from Uji, Kyoto, then is carefully prepared in Quebec. It can be enjoyed pure, as usucha, or become the base of a more gourmet latte depending on your mood.

What is the taste difference between matcha and coffee?

Coffee offers roasted notes, sometimes chocolatey, caramelized, fruity or bitter depending on its origin and preparation. It is rich in contrasts and can be very expressive.
Matcha, on the other hand, is vegetal, fresh, and deep. When it's good quality, it shouldn't be aggressively bitter. Instead, it develops a natural sweetness, a silky texture, and that savory sensation called umami. Our Ceremonial Matcha from Uji has a pronounced umami, subtly nutty notes, and a clean finish, without marked astringency.

And caffeine in all of this?

Both coffee and matcha contain caffeine. The amount actually consumed can vary depending on the portion, recipe, brewing time for coffee, and the amount of powder used for matcha. It is therefore more useful to look at your total consumption throughout the day than to seek a single answer for each cup.
Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid naturally present in tea. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine has been studied for its potential effects on attention, but the results depend notably on dosages and individuals . The experience remains very personal: some appreciate the direct nature of coffee, while others prefer the more settled experience of matcha.
For healthy adults, Health Canada recommends a maximum daily caffeine intake of 400 mg. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, as well as those sensitive to caffeine or with certain health conditions, should consult a healthcare professional to determine what is appropriate for them .

Why replace coffee with matcha, sometimes?

It's not about declaring war on coffee. It's more about having a different option. Matcha can be a great alternative on days when you want to change your routine, slow down for a few minutes, or explore new flavors.
Ceremonial Matcha prepared with hot water allows you to fully enjoy its vegetal profile and umami. If you prefer a gentler introduction to the world of matcha, a matcha latte with oat milk is an excellent starting point. And for a more gourmet version, our vanilla matcha with natural flavors, sugar-free, adds a warm note without masking the tea's identity.

Matcha, a routine that adapts to your day

The best thing about matcha is its versatility. It adapts to your rhythm, not the other way around.
In the morning, prepare it as usucha for a calm and bright start. In the afternoon, turn it into an iced latte. Before a period of work, take a few moments to whisk the powder and make the preparation a real break. It's not just a drink: it's a small landmark in a day that sometimes goes too fast.

So, matcha or coffee?

Choose coffee when you crave its intensity and immediacy. Choose matcha when you're looking for a gentler vegetal taste, a moment of preparation, or an elegant alternative to your usual routine.
And above all, don't hesitate to love both. The best choice is not the one that eliminates a habit, but the one that makes you want to savor your day more.
